Volunteering

Our Community Service and Volunteering Programme is an interactive programme that promotes empathy, morals, ethics and respect for all sentient beings, including fellow humans. The programme is aimed at encouraging and fostering an interest in animal welfare, and should never be used as a way of punishing children or young adults for any misbehaviour.

Types of Volunteers

We consider the following categories of volunteers:

  • Youngsters from schools, colleges and universities who wish to fulfil their prescribed community service requirements;
  • Youngsters and members of the public who wish to volunteer by choice; and
  • People working in animal health and animal welfare who would like additional hands-on experience.

Age Restriction

Children under the age of 13 are not considered for our Volunteer Programme, and youngsters between the ages of 13 and 21 are required to provide an indemnity form signed by a parent or guardian.

Becoming a Volunteer

The following procedure is necessary in order to become a volunteer:

1. Submit a letter of motivation to kennels@jhbspca.co.za

This letter must include:

  • Your name, age, school, grade and subjects;
  • Your post-school plans or intentions;
  • Details about how you feel the JSPCA will benefit from you volunteering;
  • The hours that you are able to volunteer; and
  • Details of the animals you have at home.

2. Complete the returned volunteer application forms.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend the next scheduled orientation course. If you are under the age of 21, an indemnity form completed and signed by a parent or guardian will be required before you can start the course. Please be aware that, as we can only accommodate a certain number of volunteers every year, your application might not be successful.
