Other Ways To Help The JSPCA
Leave A Legacy
A legacy is a lasting way to reflect your beliefs and values; and is the most significant personal statement you can make for animals. These gifts are vital to our work and enable us to be guardians of animals in need, to care for the sick and injured and to provide a safe haven for the lost or abandoned.
By leaving a gift in your Will, you become an Animal Guardian, a cherished partner who works alongside us to protect animals, rescue them from harm and care for them – long into the future.
Why a will is important
Writing a will enables you to ensure that everything you cherish and have worked hard for is passed on to your loved ones and the causes you hold dear. It’s a voice that will be heard when you are no longer here.
Deciding what you’d like to leave is the first step. Here are a few ways to leave a gift in your will:
If you’ve decided to remember animals in your Will, it’s important to use the correct wording and to include the Society’s registered name: Johannesburg SPCA. To assist you and your attorney, here’s an example of the correct clause;
These days, making or amending a Will is relatively easy, but we always recommend that you seek advice from your attorney or qualified advisor when you make or change your Will. If you’ve already made a Will and now wish to include a gift to the Johannesburg SPCA.
Suggested wording for your Will:
I (full name), leave the residue/xx% of my estate/the sum of R________ to the JSPCA, Non-Profit Org. No 003-244 NPO and Public Benefit Org. No PBO930004317 of 5 Benray Road, Booysens, Johannesburg, to be used at the JSPCA’s discretion. The receipt of an authorised officer of the JSPCA shall be an absolute discharge to my executors.
The JSPCA does not recommend that you make a codicil without consulting a qualified advisor, who should ensure that any codicil made is executed correctly and properly reflects your intentions.
Where Your Gift Will GoLegacies are used carefully, to ensure that they achieve the greatest possible impact and make a positive difference that animals can feel. Your legacy will enable us to continue the fight against cruelty and provide humane education to children and youth in the communities where it’s most needed. Your gift will help us to rescue, rehabilitate and release wildlife, and give second chances to unwanted, neglected or abused pets. Every legacy is important to us as they help to build a future where animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve. Contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org to include us in your will.

If you love animals, why not become a member of the Johannesburg SPCA? You’ll receive regular updates about our work and your annual fee (which covers membership from April 2019 – March 2020) entitles you to a vote at our AGM.
For as little as R400 per month you can sponsor a kennel or a farm animal and share your love with a special dog, cat, goat, sheep, cow, pig, duck, chicken or rabbit. Your support will provide food, shelter and primary health care for this animal for an entire month! If the animal in your sponsored kennel or farm yard is adopted or re-homed, your sponsorship will continue to feed the next animal in the kennel or farm yard.
To show our appreciation, a certificate with your name on it will be displayed on the kennel or in the farm yard to acknowledge your sponsorship.
Our larger sponsors are also listed on our website here and featured in our communications. To sponsor us or ask any questions, simply phone 011 681 3600 or email email@example.com

Community Service Programme
We run our community service programme in conjunction with the schools in the Johannesburg region during school holidays. This gives learners the opportunity to participate in community service projects, as required by the national curriculum.
Learners needing to complete their Community Service assignments are invited to support the SPCA by volunteering at one of our fundraising events or exhibitions. To sign up, submit the following to SPCA Volunteer Coordinator a month prior to the assignment due date: A stamped letter from the school stipulating the students’ community service requirements as well as a letter of motivation are required.
As we are only be able to accommodate a certain number of students at any given time, students will be selected on a first come, first serve basis and those selected are required to attend a brief orientation session.

Our Wish List
Put an extra bag of dog or cat food into your trolley this week or simply donate what you’re not using anymore. We’re in need of:
- Dog and cat food: Dry Montego pellets if possible.
- Blankets: We change the animals’ (blankets) on a daily basis. Any blankets are welcome, new or used.
- A washing machine: Our washing machine run tirelessly to keep up with the loads of blankets and theatre drapes. A support washing machine will, pun intended, lighten its load!
- Goods for the charity shop: We sell new and second hand goods, including clothes, books, furniture, CD’s, picture frames, children’s clothing, toys, books, ornaments, cutlery, crockery, and garden tools.
- Pet toys: We always need toys, especially chew toys, to entertain the animals in the kennels and reduce kennel stress. And don’t forget the cats!

At JSCPA we tend to take on a couple of key projects at any one time. Currently we are focusing on STERBRATION and PROJECT COOL.
For our 116th birthday this year, we decided to host a steribration as our celebration. What this means is that we’re aiming to sterilise 116 animals as part of our birthday festivities.
The single most important thing that we can do to save cats and dogs from all the suffering and death that their overpopulation causes is to spay and neuter them. It makes a big difference! Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens! (Source: PETA) Sterilization also has many benefits, including improving the health of your animals, reducing undesirable behaviors, and preventing unwanted animals.
Our aim for this project is to raise R100k! This is easily achievable with your help! Donate just R100 to this cause and make a difference. Better yet get 5 of your closest friends to each donate R100 and make a difference.
The other project we’re currently fundraising for is PROJECT COOL! With Global Warming on everyone’s mind, we have to come up with ways to help our animals cool down. Although they don’t feel the heat as bad as we do – they still need to be taken care of to help prevent dehydration. We want to put shade cover on all our kennels that will help make the kennels cooler for the pets. In order to do so we need your help with either a donation in kind (we provide a 18A certificate for any monetary donations) or material to put on the kennels. Our goal for this project is R100k and we’d to reach this before summer is over.
Volunteering is a wonderful and meaningful way to enrich both your own life and that of the animals. You can walk the dogs, groom the cats or just be of general help to our dedicated staff.
